What Is The Difference Between Muay Thai And Kickboxing?

This article compares Muay Thai and Kickboxing, explaining the differences between the two martial arts. - Kickboxing is a full-contact martial art that encompasses a wide variety of techniques, making it an excellent workout. It involves kicking, punching and combos to take down the opponent. Whereas Muay Thai is an encompassing training regimen that originated in Thailand. Muay Thai is a powerful counter-attack sport with timed rounds and more attacks allowed. It has also set its own culture with a specific mind set and active use of volume and movements. This makes Muay Thai different from Kickboxing as it has its own unique approach to combat. Both martial arts are excellent workouts and can help improve fitness levels and overall wellbeing but they have their differences too.

Muay Thai is a more complete martial art than kickboxing, which only teaches punches. In Muay Thai, punches and kicks are used to land blows on opponents. Muay Thai has been around since muay and is considered one of the oldest martial arts. It utilizes punches, kicks, knees, elbows and clinch strikes to defeat an opponent. It also involves footwork and other techniques such as the eight point striking system which involves striking at eight points on the body. This includes head, chest, stomach and leg strikes. Kickboxing on the other hand is a very rigorous sport that utilizes highly skilled punches such as jabs, hooks and uppercuts. Unlike Muay Thai which features both punches and kicks in its fighting style, kickboxing focuses mainly on punching type blows while also allowing some kicking techniques such as roundhouse kicks but not in the same capacity as Muay Thai does with its eight point striking system or elbow strikes.

In pure kickboxing fights, the fighters wear boxing gloves and suits that range from traditional karate gis to full-contact western style kickboxing suits. Fighters in Muay Mat style fight with bare fists and are allowed to use elbows, knees and other strikes. In a Muay Thai fight, fighters can knock their opponents out with punches or kicks or rack up points by throwing bombs of long combinations of strikes. The goal is to deliver rapid fire kicks and punches while also finding ways to outmaneuver your opponent with clever footwork. Motivated fighters will also use haymaker-style punches to try and land that one lucky shot that could end the fight quickly.

Kickboxing excels in this area, as kickboxers are allowed to strike with their hands and feet while Muay Thai boxers are not. Kickboxers strike with speed, power and agility while performing kicks that Muay Thai boxers lack. They can also mix punches and kicks in rapid combinations to punctuate their strike combos with high and low kicks.

Muay Thai fighters use their entire bodies to deliver powerful punches and kicks, hold muay thai bodies and use more complex strikes. Kickboxers often have a wider range of attacks that can be delivered from a different stance than muay thai fighters. Kickboxing is also used in the UFC, Bellator mixed martial arts and other full-contact ring sports. Muay Thai is regarded as one of the most effective stand-up martial arts because of its devastating effects on an opponent.
